華爾街日報與NBC新聞在10月中旬共同進行一項民調，針對35歲以下的美國年輕選民，詢問他們對2016年美國總統大選的關心程度，其中有54%的受訪者表示對選舉高度關注，比率低於2012年的60%，更低於全體選民的72%。
維吉尼亞大學政治中心青年領導者計畫主任史楚普（Ken Stroupe）說：「我看不到2012年的熱情，更沒有2008年的那種激情。他們（民主黨候選人希拉蕊?柯林頓與共和黨候選人川普）是不同的世代，對年輕選民而言，這幾乎就像向父母借車，很不錯，但沒意思。」
民調結果顯示，在18至29歲的選民中，柯林頓的支持率領先川普，但領先差距明顯不及歐巴馬。
學生選民心中還有別的支持人選，包括自由派候選人強森（Gary Johnson）與綠黨斯泰因（Jill Stein），他們吸引了許多大學生的支持。
民調也反映出，兩位獨立候選人獲得來自年輕選民的支持，高於全體選民。他們在18至29歲選民中的支持度合計為22%，但在全體選民中只獲得9%支持度。
